Fractal ID’s identity proofing

Collection

Coupling Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology with human expertise, Fractal ID collects the core identity attributes and evidence from individuals and businesses going through the customer identification process. Our software scans identity documents deploying OCR capabilities, reading through its Machine-Readable Zones (MRZ), barcodes or any other readable zones it might contain, extracting the relevant information for verification purposes in a reliable and transparent manner.

Fractal ID can automatically scan and validate over a thousand identity documents from over a hundred countries, and can verify over 3000 identity documents using human review of identity document databases. Fractal ID is also capable of serving financial institutions which require a more limited range of documents. The discussion on narrowing the range of identity documents approvable takes place between a Fractal ID account manager and the financial institution.

Validation

Besides collecting the identity attributes of a customer, Fractal ID ensures that the identity attributes and evidence were collected from or verified against a valid and credible identity document. Fractal ID deploys different identity verification methods. The “level of assurance” is the degree of confidence that the customer’s claimed identity is their real identity. The level of assurance achieved will depend on the selected method. In Fractal ID, technology and human review work together to validate a natural person to which all claimed identity attributes allowing us to determine, with different levels of assurance depending on the selected method, that a real ID document, that was not tampered with, attests that a certain natural person with certain attributes exists.

Verification

The final step of identity proofing requires that validated identity information is verified as belonging to the customer. Fractal ID uses different identity verification methods. In Fractal ID, verifying that the claimed identity belongs to the customer supplying the identity evidence and information, requires the following requirements:

  • Possession of the identity document: Ensuring that the customer has possession of ID document;

  • Matching of the identity document: Conducting a trustworthy comparison between the person in the ID document and the customer;

  • Integrity of identity document: Detecting manipulations of the biometric characteristics of the legitimate identity owner (e.g., wigs, make up, masks, prosthetics, photos, 3-dimensional models).

This part of the process allows us to determine, with the necessary levels of assurance, that the claimed identity belongs to the customer that stands on the other side of the screen.

Let’s take a further look at other core aspects of Fractal ID’s verification standards.
